READ Psalm 119:57–64. 57 You are my portion, LORD; I have promised to obey your words. 58 I have sought your face with all my heart; be gracious to me according to your promise. 59 I have considered my ways and have turned my steps to your statutes. 60 I will hasten and not delay to obey your commands. 61 Though the wicked bind me with ropes, I will not forget your law. 62 At midnight I rise to give you thanks for your righteous laws. 63 I am a friend to all who fear you, to all who follow your precepts. 64 The earth is filled with your love, LORD; teach me your decrees. GOD’S LOVE FILLS THE EARTH. The whole “earth is filled with [God’s] love” (verse 64). God created the world and cares for it in love. Jesus says we can trust God because he cares even for the birds of the air (Matthew 6:26) and loves everything he has made (Psalm 145:9). It is because he loves all people he created that he wants them to receive also his redeeming love. “I take no pleasure in the death of anyone. . . . Repent and live!” (Ezekiel 18:32). It is important to neither think God loves only believers nor to think he loves everyone in the world in exactly the same way. How should we respond to such a loving God? We should align all parts of our lives with God’s Word (verses 59–60). Prayer: Lord, I praise you that you have always loved me, but I praise you that you opened my heart to receive your saving love as well. “Your sovereign mercy called me and taught my opening mind; the world had else enthralled me, to heavenly glories blind.” Thank you for your grace. Amen.

Truth divides. It divides good from evil. It divides the light from the darkness. It divides those that accept it from those who reject it. Truth has always caused division. Follow the truth anyway...that's God's plan. When we think about speaking truth to each other we often think about words that make us feel good, that put a smile on our face and brighten someones day. We think about reminding each other about the truth found in God’s Word in order to encourage someone in their faith – and these are all important. But there is another kind of truth that we need to be willing to share. It is a truth that does not feel good in the moment. They are words that are hard to hear and even harder to speak. They are words of correction. Faithful are the wounds of a friend. Proverbs 27:6 This does not seem fun or pleasant. What are the wounds of a fren? What this Proverb is talking about is reproof and correction. There are hard truths that we sometimes have to speak to each other. There are times when we veer off the path that is good. We see it when our attitudes are bad, act selfishly, and are prideful. Sometime we misrepresent God and believe things that don’t line up with Scripture. In these cases, we need someone to come and speak hard truth into our lives so that we can change and get better. We need to be willing to wound our frens, for their good, and we need to accept the wounding of a fren for our good. We need someone who is willing to say, “All this is unbecoming to someone who is going to be inheriting a kingdom.” Proverbs 27:17 tells us that, Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another. In order to sharpen Iron it has to clash with iron. Steel has to be rubbed against steel. There has to be some kind of friction. You have to have a fren who is willing to clash with you, but this clash makes us better not worse. This clashing makes people more sharp and more useful. If anything, it deepens a frenship because hard truth spoken shows true love. How do we go about speaking this kind of truth to someone? Always in love. Always with kind words. Hard truth should always be constructive never cruel. Jesus is our perfect example of this. He was kindness personified, He was love in the flesh, but He was not afraid to call sin sin. He was not shy about pointing out truth. And He did this always in love, always with care, and never in moments of frustration or with cruelty. Always speak with humility and never with an attitude of haughtiness or a holier than thou attitude. Do not nitpick and don’t feel the need to point out every little weakness your fren has. That is not your calling. Let 1 Thessalonians 5:14 be your guide – And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. What about when a fren comes to us and speaks hard words, how should we react? We must beat down our pride and not be defensive. We need to listen and not make excuses. We need to pray about it, asking God to show us if there is any truth in what was said. We need to repent and ask God to help us overcome. A fren who is willing to speak hard truth is rare, but if you find a friend like this be thankful, because you will have found someone who loves you deeply and wants to see you flourish. “These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another. and let none of you devise evil in your hearts against his neighbor; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith the Lord.” – Zechariah 8:16-17

When the road runs dead You can see a way I don’t And it makes no sense But You say that’s what faith is for When I see a flood You see a promise When I see a grave You see a door And when I’m at my end You see where the future starts I don’t know how You make a way But I know You will You’ve been good on every promise From Eden to Zion Through every dead end And out of that grave I don’t know how You make a way But I know You will When the world’s on fire It’s not like You don’t have a plan And when the earth gives way On this Rock Your Church will stand Nothing has ever once surprised You Nothing has ever made You flinch And when it all shakes out The gates of hell don’t stand a chance You pulled my heart from Egypt You carved a road through sea From all our chains To endless praise The story ends in You

READ Psalm 109: 30–31. 30 With my mouth I will greatly extol the LORD; in the great throng of worshipers I will praise him. 31 For he stands at the right hand of the needy, to save their lives from those who would condemn them. AT THE RIGHT HAND OF THE NEEDY. In ancient law courts your accuser would stand at your right hand, prosecuting his case against you. David declares that he is the victim of false indictments, and hopes that a prosecutor would be put at his enemy’s right hand (see verse 6.) Now suddenly the scene changes, and God who stands “at the right hand of the needy” (verse 31) to defend them, not accuse them. In Jesus Christ God came to be our advocate (1 John 2:1–2). He stands for our defense when we are accused (cf. Acts 7:56.) And when Jesus the true advocate came, he forgave his betrayer and enemies (John 13:18–30). So should we. Prayer: Lord, I confess my grudges. I justify them because I am not seeking repayment, but I avoid some people and I hope for them to fail. Help me forgive fully, all the way down, and begin to pray for their repentance and good. “My sin, dear Savior, made thee bleed, yet thou didst pray for me!” Amen.

READ Psalm 109:21–29. 21 But you, Sovereign LORD, help me for your name’s sake; out of the goodness of your love, deliver me. 22 For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me. 23 I fade away like an evening shadow; I am shaken off like a locust. 24 My knees give way from fasting; my body is thin and gaunt. 25 I am an object of scorn to my accusers; when they see me, they shake their heads. 26 Help me, LORD my God; save me according to your unfailing love. 27 Let them know that it is your hand, that you, LORD, have done it. 28 While they curse, may you bless; may those who attack me be put to shame, but may your servant rejoice. 29 May my accusers be clothed with disgrace and wrapped in shame as in a cloak. BUT YOU, LORD. The phrase “But you, Sovereign Lord” here, as ever in the psalms, marks a great turning point. Hard prayers become softer, hopeless prayers more confident, sad prayers are filled with joy, and guilty prayers arrive in mercy. Our prayer may rightly begin with our own hurts, sins, enemies, surroundings, troubles. But it is only when you lay these things before God, see them in light of who he is, and say, “But you . . .”—that release, relief, growth, hope, and strength begin to come. The “But you . . .” of the psalms has its New Testament counterpart in Paul’s great “But now. . . .” The entire human race is lost in sin (Romans 1:18–3:20), “but now apart from the law . . . righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ” (Romans 3:21–22). Prayer: Lord, I thank you that your reality changes everything. I am weak—O, but you . . . I deserve nothing—O, but you . . . I don’t see any way out of this—O, but you . . . My life seems to be derailed—O, but you . . . I don’t know how to pray. Ah, but you will help me. Amen.

READ Psalm 106:13–18. 13 But they soon forgot what he had done and did not wait for his plan to unfold. 14 In the desert they gave in to their craving; in the wilderness they put God to the test. 15 So he gave them what they asked for, but sent a wasting disease upon them. 16 In the camp they grew envious of Moses and of Aaron, who was consecrated to the LORD. 17 The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan; it buried the company of Abiram. 18 Fire blazed among their followers; a flame consumed the wicked. BUT THEY SOON FORGOT. Every stanza of this poem makes the same point: Human beings fail at living as they should with God and their neighbors. No matter how many things God does for them, it doesn’t change their hearts—their ingratitude (verse 13), their endless craving (verse 14), their sense of superiority to God (verse 14), or their envy and selfishness (verse 16). We need something to be done in us to save and transform us, because we can’t do it ourselves. In the movie Superman Returns, Lois Lane says, “The world doesn’t need a savior. And neither do I.” That expresses the deep language of the natural human heart, and it is utterly, fatally wrong. Prayer: Lord, I praise you that you opened my heart to you, because I would never have done it myself. “My heart owns none before thee, for thy rich grace I thirst; this knowing—if I love thee, thou must have loved me first.”Amen

READ Psalm 106:6–12. 6 We have sinned, even as our ancestors did; we have done wrong and acted wickedly. 7 When our ancestors were in Egypt, they gave no thought to your miracles; they did not remember your many kindnesses, and they rebelled by the sea, the Red Sea. 8 Yet he saved them for his name’s sake, to make his mighty power known. 9 He rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried up; he led them through the depths as through a desert. 10 He saved them from the hand of the foe; from the hand of the enemy he redeemed them. 11 The waters covered their adversaries; not one of them survived. 12 Then they believed his promises and sang his praise. THE SIN OF INGRATITUDE. This psalm is about ingratitude. “They did not remember your many kindnesses” (verse 7). It is the root of all human sin: “They neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him” (Romans 1:21). That may not at first sound serious, but consider the crime of plagiarism. It is both theft and lie. It robs others of their due and creates the illusion that you are more able than you are. Sin is cosmic ingratitude. It gives you the delusion that you have the ability to conduct and hold your life together. Actually every day that your heart keeps pumping, your country is not invaded, and your brain keeps functioning is wholly an undeserved gift of God. We ought to live simple, normal, uneventful days full of amazed, thankful joy. Prayer: Lord, I thank you for my routine mercies. I thank you for sustaining my life daily, for being endlessly patient with me, for shielding me from so many consequences of my foolish behavior, for the ways you have walked with me in trials, and for all my answered prayers. Amen.
